The Department
The Department of Philology of the University of Patras was founded in 1994 (P.D. 305/94, GG 163/4-10-1994) and admitted its first students in the academic year 1997-1998. The Department became administratively autonomous in the academic year 2001-2002.

Undergraduate Studies Program in Philology leading to the award of a Bachelor of Philology with the following specializations: 1. Byzantine & Modern Greek Philology, 2. Linguistics, 3. Classical Studies (4-year course)

Postgraduate Studies Program “Contemporary Approaches to Texts: Readings and Interpretations”, leading to the award of a Master’s Degree Diploma in the following specializations: 1. Byzantine Philology, 2. Classical Studies, 3. Modern Greek Philology (2-year course)
- Postgraduate Program “Linguistics: Language and Communication”, leading to the award of a Master’s Degree (2 years of study)
- Ph.D
Purpose
The main purpose of the Department is to serve research, cultivating the fields of knowledge it includes, and to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills, so that they can satisfactorily respond to the modern demands of the labor market.
The Department of Philology also aims to establish a range of interdisciplinary studies, initiating collaborations with scientists of various specialties, from other faculties of the same or other universities, in Greece and abroad. It is a particularly extroverted Department that encourages communication, research synergies and the exchange of students and teachers with important universities in other countries.
During its twenty-five years of operation, the Department of Philology has many research and educational programs, conferences, workshops, summer schools, collaborations with distinguished scientists from all over the world, while several of its graduates continue their studies at major universities in Europe and America or participate in research and educational programs at other universities or teach at universities in Greece and Europe. At the same time, the Department of Philology maintains cooperation with dozens of foreign universities and exhibits great mobility at the level of both students and teachers within the framework of the Socrates / Erasmus + program.
Structure
The Department of Philology has twenty-four (24) faculty members: nine (9) Professors, six (6) Associate Professors, and nine (9) Assistant Professors.
Additionally, the Department is staffed with five (5) EDIP members and one (1) ETEP member, who support the educational and research work through teaching and laboratory work.
