The Department of Philology at the University of Patras was established in 1994 (Presidential Decree 305/94, Government Gazette 163/4-10-1994) and welcomed its first students during the 1997–1998 academic year. The Department became administratively independent in the 2001–2002 academic year.

— Mission
The primary mission of the Department is to advance research across the academic fields it encompasses and to equip its students with the knowledge and skills required to meet the demands of today’s professional environment.
The Department of Philology also aims to foster an interdisciplinary academic environment by developing collaborations with scholars from a wide range of disciplines, faculties, and universities in Greece and abroad. It is a highly outward-looking department that actively promotes academic communication, research partnerships, and the exchange of students and academic staff with leading universities around the world.
Throughout more than twenty-five years of operation, the Department has successfully implemented numerous research and educational projects, organized international conferences, workshops, and summer schools, and established collaborations with distinguished scholars from across the globe. Many of its graduates continue their studies at prestigious universities in Europe and the United States, participate in research and educational programmes at other institutions, or pursue academic careers at universities in Greece and abroad. At the same time, the Department maintains partnerships with dozens of international universities and demonstrates strong mobility of both students and academic staff through the Socrates / Erasmus+ programme.
— Structure
The Department of Philology is staffed by twenty-three (23) faculty members: eight (8) Professors, seven (7) Associate Professors, and eight (8) Assistant Professors.
In addition, the Department is supported by four (4) members of the Special Teaching Staff (EDIP) and one (1) member of the Special Technical Laboratory Staff (ETEP), who contribute to its teaching, laboratory, and research activities.
