— Undergraduate Studies
The undergraduate degree programme has a minimum duration of four years (eight semesters). To graduate, students must complete 240 ECTS credits, corresponding to 48 courses.
Semester Registration
At the beginning of each semester, students must renew their registration through the University of Patras online student system, progress.upatras.gr.
— Course Registration
At the beginning of every semester, students must also register online for the courses they intend to take and be examined in.
Course registration takes place within deadlines announced by the Department Secretariat. Registering for a course is necessary in order to:
- take the examination for that course; and
- receive the corresponding course textbook.
Students should therefore make sure that their course registration has been completed correctly before the relevant deadline.
— Suspension of Studies
Students may apply for a temporary suspension of studies for up to eight semesters in total during their degree.
Applications are submitted to the Department Secretariat and must be based on serious family, personal, or other circumstances. Where the suspension concerns the current semester, the application should normally be submitted at the beginning of that semester.
During a period of suspension, students temporarily lose their active student status and the benefits associated with it, such as access to student accommodation and meals, reduced public-transport fares, healthcare benefits, and library services.
The period of suspension does not count towards the total duration of study.
At the end of the approved suspension period, students should contact the Secretariat so that their student record can be reactivated.
— Withdrawal from the Department
Students who wish to leave the programme permanently may apply to withdraw from the Department through the Secretariat.
Once withdrawal has been completed, the student loses their student status and cannot simply re-register in the same Department.
Under Greek regulations, a student may normally be enrolled in only one undergraduate programme at a Greek higher education institution at a time.
— Examinations
Students may sit examinations only for courses for which they have officially registered.
Examinations take place according to the University academic calendar and the examination timetable published by the Department Secretariat. Students must bring their student ID card or another official form of identification to the examination.
— Certificates and Academic Records
Students can request official certificates through the University’s online student system.
The same platform allows students to follow their academic progress and view information recorded in their student account.
— Degree Structure and Graduation Requirements
To obtain the degree, students must successfully complete 48 courses (240 ECTS).
The programme consists of two main stages.
— First Stage of Studies
Students complete 24 courses:
- 18 compulsory courses
- 6 elective courses
These courses provide the common academic foundation of the degree.
— Specialization Stage
In the second stage of the programme, students choose one of the Department’s three specializations:
- Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies
- Linguistics
- Classical Studies
Students complete a further 24 courses, with the precise combination of compulsory and elective courses depending on their specialization.
— Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies
Students must successfully complete:
- 8 compulsory specialization courses
- at least 4 specialization electives
- up to 12 additional electives, which may be selected either from Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies or from the Department’s other specializations
for a total of 24 courses.
— Linguistics
Students must successfully complete:
- 3 compulsory specialization courses
- at least 9 specialization electives
- up to 12 additional electives, which may be selected either from Linguistics or from the Department’s other specializations
for a total of 24 courses.
— Classical Studies
Students must successfully complete:
- 8 compulsory specialization courses (normally two per semester)
- at least 8 specialization electives (normally at least two per semester)
- up to 8 electives from the Department’s other specializations
for a total of 24 courses.
Successful completion of all programme requirements amounts to 240 ECTS credits and leads to the award of the undergraduate degree.
