The Laboratory of Palaeography was established in August 2004 and has been operating since November of the same year in a specially designed and equipped space in the Department of Philology.

The Laboratory supports the teaching and research needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as academic staff, in the fields of Greek palaeography and codicology, textual editing, and textual criticism, with particular reference to classical, Byzantine (learned and vernacular), and Modern Greek literature.

The Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects of the Department of Philology at the University of Patras was founded in 2000 by Professor Emerita Angeliki Ralli and has extensive experience in the documentation and study of dialects. The study of Modern Greek dialects is of particular importance, as it contributes to the preservation of linguistic diversity and, through it, to the safeguarding of cultural heritage.

Since December 2019, the Laboratory has been directed by Professor Dimitrios Papazachariou. Its research team consists of linguists, including Professor Emerita Angeliki Ralli, faculty members of the University of Patras, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and postgraduate students.

The Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects is housed in a specially equipped area of the Department of Philology and includes state-of-the-art electronic equipment, specialised bibliographical resources, and rare archival material containing written dialectal texts. This material has been collected through research projects focusing on Modern Greek dialects, as well as through donations from individuals, associations, and cultural organisations. The Laboratory’s equipment was funded primarily through the EPEAEK II Programme (Third Community Support Framework) and the European Social Fund (ESF).

The research conducted at the Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects constitutes the first systematic effort to study and document Modern Greek dialects through the creation of an organised database of spoken dialectal material. The research follows international developments in the documentation of endangered linguistic systems and makes use of modern technological tools in order to produce high-quality research results.

The Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects aims to serve as a link between the academic community and local communities, encouraging local institutions and communities to take an active role in preserving their distinctive linguistic and cultural heritage.

EATT is a research unit operating within an academic framework. Its aim is to promote the scholarly use and study of archival materials and the press through the Postgraduate Programme, as well as through collaborations with researchers and other universities.

A central objective of EATT is the study of the archives of writers, organisations, institutions, associations, and other bodies with an established record and significant contribution to Modern Greek literature and the country’s broader cultural life. It also focuses on the study of the press, including newspapers and periodicals, in relation to literature.

As part of its research agenda, EATT develops a broad and interdisciplinary interest in the full range of heterogeneous archival materials that may be preserved in literary archives, including correspondence, diaries, drafts and working manuscripts (brouillons), personal belongings, private libraries, and related materials.
